about
Shaastra, the annual technical festival of IIT Madras, has come a long way since its inception at the turn of the millennium to become one of the most popular inter-college fests in the country. It is today the largest of its kind in Asia and the only student managed event in the world to be awarded the ISO 9001:2008 certification, a reflection of the students’ enthusiasm and passion to guarantee the highest standards of quality.
The next edition of Shaastra will be held from 4th-7th January, 2014 with the vision of ‘Breaking Boundaries’. Shaastra is now aiming to move past barriers of age and distance with new initiatives like launching student made products and increasing the grandeur of events by staging shows for major event finals. With participation from Dubai last year, Shaastra this year will grow bigger internationally as well, in the pursuit of Breaking boundaries.
As part of its defining principles, Shaastra is taking up special efforts to celebrate the research being undertaken by the institute students under the Research Confluence, an event which will consist of interactive panel discussions and lectures by eminent speakers from various sectors. The event will attempt to bridge the gap between the academia and the industry, and will attempt to highlight what the industry expects from the research at IITM.
Shaastra is now not just a platform for engineering students but also school children under the banner of Shaastra Junior. In addition to the Shaastra School Quiz a city-wide Science Championship will see the brightest minds of Chennai receive special exposure to engineering. These initiatives are an attempt to reach younger kids and hence begin inspiration at the grass-root level.
One major initiative this year is Shaastra's tie-up with Team Indus under the Lunar Rover Challenge which will see the winners design actually stand a chance to go to the Moon. With extensive cooperation from the faculty as well, such a lofty feat is now within the grasp of engineering students - the participants at Shaastra. In addition Shaastra will also continue to host the IITM Research Expo and the Industrial Open House. Shaastra Nights (Envisage), Shaastra's unique blend of technology and art will also be back this year, bigger and better than before, with new shows to enthrall you and take your breath away.
To generate a footfall of 20,000 people during the fest, Shaastra undertakes an Outreach Programme which focuses on on-ground publicity in over 350 colleges across India, including IITs, NITs and other leading institutions across 12 states, both by visiting these colleges and by sending out over 600 invitations. These efforts at publicity are not limited to just India either. In addition to this, a series of pre-Shaastra events and workshops will be conducted across India, in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kerala, Pune, Vizag and Gujarat under the banner of Shaastra Sampark.
